Land Rover Defender Works V8: Rover Defender Works V8:
Land Rover Defender Works V8: The Ultimate Factory-Built Defender
Few vehicles have achieved the cult status of the classic Land Rover Defender. For decades it served as a workhorse across the globe, turning it into the icon it is today. Yet when production of the original Defender finally came to an end in 2016, many enthusiasts believed the story was over.
Fortunately, Land Rover had one final chapter to write.
To celebrate the Defender's 70th anniversary, Land Rover Classic unveiled the Defender Works V8 in 2018. Rather than being a modified aftermarket special, the Works V8 was a fully engineered factory-backed creation from Land Rover itself. Production was strictly limited, making it one of the rarest and most desirable Defenders ever built.

At the heart of the Works V8 sits a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 producing 405bhp and 515Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Performance figures were unlike anything previously associated with a traditional Defender, with the short-wheelbase 90 capable of reaching 60mph in under six seconds.
The upgrades extended far beyond the engine. Land Rover Classic stripped 90 and 110 donor cars down to a bare chassis, and then comprehensively reworked the suspension, brakes and handling characteristics, fitting uprated springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, alongside larger Alcon braking hardware. The result was a Defender that retained its iconic character while delivering a driving experience unlike any other factory-built example before it.
Visually, the Works V8 struck a perfect balance between heritage and exclusivity. Distinctive alloy wheels, unique badging and carefully selected launch colours set these vehicles apart without losing the unmistakable silhouette that made the Defender famous.
Inside, you’re treated to Windsor leather upholstery on almost every surface, including the headlining. There are comfortable, figure-hugging Recaro sports front seats and prominent in the gloss black centre console is the Land Rover Classic Infotainment System, which incorporates modern functionality such as satellite navigation, DAB radio and Bluetooth thanks to a 3.5‑inch touchscreen, with an original display and facia.

What did the press say?
EVO Magazine described the Works V8 as "Leather-wrapped V8 lunacy and lovable Defenderness."

Among the most sought-after specifications is the original launch combination of Roma Red paintwork paired with a cream leather interior. It perfectly captures the spirit of the Works V8 programme, blending traditional Land Rover design with a level of luxury rarely seen in a classic Defender.
As values of special Defender models continue to strengthen, the Works V8 has established itself as one of the most collectible modern Land Rovers. Limited production numbers, factory provenance and the significance of being one of the final evolutions of the original Defender all contribute to its growing desirability among enthusiasts and collectors alike.
For those looking to experience one of the most special Defenders ever produced, Cult Automotive currently has a particularly impressive example of the Defender Works V8 for sale. Finished in the coveted launch specification of Roma Red with cream leather, and having covered just 5,300 miles from new, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of Land Rover's most celebrated modern classics.
The Defender Works V8 was never intended to be a practical necessity. Instead, it was a celebration of everything enthusiasts loved about the original Defender, elevated by modern engineering and V8 performance. In doing so, Land Rover created what many consider to be the ultimate factory-built Defender.
Buying a Defender Works V8 today
When first launched, those without the knowledge of the hours poured into the development and building of these special Defenders baulked at the starting price of £150,000. Today though, with the limited run over, you have to spend well north of £200,000 if you want Land Rover Classic Works to build you a bespoke build of similar specification. In our opinion, having sampled various aftermarket classic Defenders, the Works V8 is a noticeable step up - a proper OEM built car.
As a result of its uniqueness, you should ensure any example has been well looked after. Chances are, even an official Land Rover main dealer has not looked after one, and these days is likely not particularly experienced in the 'classic' Defender anymore, let alone with with a V8 shoehorned in from another model!
As such, ideally a car will have been back to Classic Works in Coventry for maintenance. Any niggles from the original build should be worked out by now, but bear in mind super low mileage cars may not have had the tweaks that more used examples would have had by going back for servicing year after year.
Finding an example is probably the most difficult aspect of Works V8 ownership. Indeed, the last example we sold was promptly exported to Japan. With the cars not available to all markets, once on the used market others will have been snapped up by enthusiasts around the globe. Expect to pay between £150,000 - £185,000 depending on mileage and provenance.

The Works V8 Trophy
An even rarer offshoot was the Works V8 Trophy - a run of 25 cars finished in Eastnor Yellow, a nod the Camel Trophy cars campaigned in the '80s. With a more heritage look, there was body‑colour steel wheels and all‑terrain equipment fitted, including a front winch, cage, roof rack, underbody protection, raised air intake, spotlights and mud‑terrain tyres. When launched, these were priced at £195,000, but owners did get to got on a mini expedition at Eastnor Castle for the full Camel Trophy experience!
Driving the Press Car 'Y8 WKS'
During 2022, we were lucky to be invited to drive 'Y8 WRKS' - the original press car - at Land Rover's Fen End test facility. You don't often see them driving in the mud! Depending on the age of the donor vehicle, later examples will have the stability control fitted. A not often talked about upgrade on the Works V8 is that it has a automatic torque biasing centre differential, shifting up to 90% of torque to the front or rear axle as required.
